“Sandra: Of a Thousand Delights” is Luchino Visconti’s adaption of the Greek tragedy of Electra and Orestes; two siblings who plot to kill their mother, Clytemnestra. Visconti moves the tale to just after the Second World War; an aperitif to the main course of “The Damned” that would follow. And you can bet this one will burn your throat when you swallow it down.

The brother and sister of “Sandra” allege that their mother betrayed their Jewish father to the Nazis. She is left to play her sins away on the piano inside a mental institution. But the siblings are still accused by her of having their fathers ‘Jewish madness’ in their blood, and so – plot their vengeance to the claim accordingly.
